Wow, where do I start with this amazing human? I am actually tearing up writing this, thinking how far she has come, and how amazing she is.
Since I first starting training with Rach in 2012 to now, she has continued to impress me throughout her journey. Her strength both physically and mentally has sky rocketed. She doesn't let anything hold her back, and is willing to try and learn new things.
What you might not know about Rachael, is she has diabetes. Does she let that get in the way? absolutely not. Has she made progress? OMG yes! She has evolved so much over these 3 years and continues to better herself each time, she makes me so proud as both a friend and trainer, she is the bacon to my eggs.
Here are some questions I asked her...
1. What type of diabetes do you have? I have type 1 Diabetes. Other names for it are Juvenile Diabetes or Diabetes Mellitus. It’s an auto immune condition which occurred when I was 12 years. I had, had everyday virus which could of been the flu or the cold that then caused my body’s immune system to mistake the cells in my pancreas that produce insulin for the bad virus and destroy those cells and I’ve never been able to produce insulin myself since. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented. A little about insulin… When carbohydrates are digested, it breaks down into glucose (sugar). This builds up in the blood stream. Insulin controls the levels of glucose in the blood by helping the glucose go from the bloodstream into the body’s cells. Once in the cells, glucose can be used for energy or stored for future needs. With me the above process fails to work properly as I don’t produce insulin. Because I give my insulin myself, I need to balance what I eat with how much insulin I do as too much insulin can make the glucose in the blood go low and not enough insulin will make it go too high. But also different emotions, like stress or anxiety, as well as exercise and believe it or not the weather can affect my levels. Diabetes is definitely no walk in the park and it’s all a balancing act.
2. What made you want to start working out? I wanted to get better control of my diabetes and get fit.
3. Biggest hurdle you have faced? About 5 years ago I wasn’t looking after my diabetes. I hated everything about it, I ate what I wanted without doing the right insulin and my levels were all over the place. I was lucky I didn’t go into ketoacidosis. Once I started learning more about diabetes with group classes I went to run by my diabetes doctor and educator. I learned about carb counting foods and adjusting my insulin to what I was eating and doing, because as I said before lots of things can affect my blood sugar level and I guess it’s also what made me start working out. Because once I got better control I been able to try and do new things.
4. What have you learnt along the way? I’ve learnt I’m not alone. I follow a few pages on instagram that posts funny memes and stuff about things only people with diabetes will understand and it’s hilarious but insightful because I used to think I was the only person who felt that way and it’s definitely hard to talk to someone who has no idea what I’m going thought. But I also have huge support from my family and friends.
5. Has working out helped you? Working out has definitely helped me. It’s helped me set a better routine of when to eat and test my levels and help with getting better control.
6. Are you limited with any exercises/ workout routines? Nope, I can do basically whatever a normal person can do, I just need to think ahead. I been lucky enough to go from insulin injections to an insulin pump recently and it has helped a lot! The settings on my pump can be adjusted for if I do high, moderate or low activity and gives me less insulin for a certain amount of time which helps my levels stay in the normal range.
7. Does your recovery take longer? Not that I know of. I just need to make sure my insulin and levels are controlled because exercise can make my blood sugar level go low and when I go low I need sugar and long acting carbohydrate, which are also high in calories that will reverse the effect of the exercise in the first place.
8. Do you take any supplements? Sometimes. When I do I need to read the nutrition labels.
9. What goals have you set for yourself? I don’t really set goals I just take every day as it comes, because every day with diabetes is different and getting by each day without one thing to go wrong can be a challenge.
10. What your inspiration? I guess anyone who has some kind of setback in life and still is able to overcome it and complete something they thought wasn’t achievable.
