Sometimes I find myself struggling to complete workouts, partly because I find it so hard to switch off at the gym as there is just so much on my mind and for some reason I feel it has higher priority than the gym.
This is what I constantly think about;
· What about all the cleaning?
· I have so much washing to do?
· I forgot to do that thing at work?
· I need to do my food prep
· Money and the cost of general living expenses
· What will happen with my future?
A thought that ALWAYS crosses my mind is instead of being at the gym or doing a home workout is that I could be cleaning or doing the washing. The more I thought about it, the more I realised I am at the gym working out after a 9 hour day, because my health is important to me and I need some ME time. Without my health I would find some of the above tasks difficult.
I don't have kids myself and I understand life gets complicated & busy when you have them, but just think in years to come when you can run around with your kids and encourage them to be healthy because of you leading by example to me that seems like a great achievement, being healthy and fit makes you a happier parent with energy to play. Setting a positive example by being healthy is important as we move forward to fight against a world overwhelmingly filled with easy, fast food options, more technology and screen time and less movement, exercise and time outdoors
There is only one you, you have one body and one life so make the most of it, I don't think anyone has ever looked back on their life and said wow I'm so glad I did all my washing and mopped my floors.
It is ok to look after yourself and put yourself first, it's ok to be "selfish" make time for yourself and do what YOU want to do!
I'm telling you now, changing your mindset and priorities will change your life! I break all my tasks down or set aside specific time/day for my household chores.. That way my mind is clear from clutter and I can focus on what I am doing at the time. Don’t get me wrong it has taken me a while to get to this point I was very into cleaning at one stage and missed out on a lot of fun things because I wanted to have a nice and clean house – which no one got to see because I was/kinda still am a hermit.
I feel better with routine and structure, but it's totally fine if that isn't how you roll. Life is all about finding out what works for you! I make my cleaning days the weekends, I put my washing on before I go to bed and wake up and either hang it out or put it in the dryer before I walk my dogs at 430am on weekdays (that's if I can be bothered) if I CBF I just do the Mount Everest size pile of washing over the weekend bit by bit.. I choose to do all of that then because once I get home from the gym after working all I want to do is lay on the couch and relax and not feel guilty about it.
My best advice to you would be to think of your health/ ultimate goal and learn to put yourself first rather than sacrificing what you want to do so you can clean and make sure your household chores are completed and think of ways to maximise your time such as food prepping in bulk – put the slow cooker on whilst you are at work or on Sunday so your food is ready for the upcoming week. What about sticking a load of washing on whilst you go for a walk..? Multitasking is my best friend and I am constantly thinking/ trying new things that will help me get to where I want in a timely manner.
DO NOT let those thoughts creep into your mind when you are on the way to the gym “I really should just go home and do the mountain of washing” commit to your work out and think how amazing you will feel after it is done!! A one hour workout is literally 4% of your day and that washing will still be there on the weekend!
I am here to tell you and show you that there is nothing wrong with taking time out for yourself and doing what you enjoy.
